Macy's Fireworks

This year, same as last year, the 34th annual Macy's 4th of July Fireworks extravaganza will be on the Hudson River.

Six barges on the Hudson loaded to the gills with over 40,000 shells will be positioned between 24th and 50th Streets off Manhattan's West Side.

The display begins at 9.20 pm, and in a breathtaking 26 minute display, will let loose the 40,000 shells at a rate of 1500 per minute.

The theme for this year's show is American Harmony, and 3 million spectators are expected to enjoy the show in New York and New Jersey.

Many millions more will also be watching live coverage of the Macy's Fireworks on NBC.

This 1-hour primetime Independence Day musical special (including Justin Bieber, among others) will be broadcast from onboard the Norwegian EPIC cruise ship.

Get into place early along the West Side Highway from 24th to 57th Streets, because people are expected to start hogging spots as early as 4 pm.

You can also watch the show from across the Hudson, on the riverwalk in Hoboken, NJ.

The Macy's Fireworks show is the Big Kahuna, but there's a few other kahunas which are equally spectacular and just as much a tradition in New York on the 4th of July.

One of these mini-kahunas is the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition, held every year on the 4th of July at the original Nathan's Famous in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Last year, Joey Chestnut won by wolfing down 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, and he only narrowly beat Takeru Kobayashi of Japan, who eat 3 & 1/2 hot dogs less.

Now tell me that isn't as big a spectacle as watching fireworks.

Also, no festival goes by in New York without at least one parade being organized, and it's usually bigger and better than the parades in most other cities.

For the 4th of July, that would be the Travis Independence Day Parade in Staten Island. 2010 is an especially big year, since this is the centennial Travis Parade.

Enjoyed the images in your hub. You enticed me to think about the 4th of July. This year is running away too fast!

True that, Smireles. The year is going by very fast. Seems like yesterday I wrote a hub for last year's 4th of July.
